November 12 is an important date in UFC history. First and foremost, it was the date of the first UFC event, which saw Royce Gracie introduce the world to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But the date also has a special significance for modern MMA as at UFC 205 on Nov. 12 in 2016, Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC’s first simultaneous two-weight world champion. And so yesterday, on the four-year anniversary of his historic win, McGregor spent the day celebrating on social media.
It started out with McGregor throwing out a turn of phrase asserting his superiority and then quickly shifted Conor declaring his own holiday, “World Champ Champ Day”.

Hey guys! What a day to be alive on this beautiful “World Champ Champ Day” How’d you spend your Champ Champ Day?— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) November 13, 2020
I had one tipple of Proper Twelve, accompanied by a 10km run, and an excellent jiu jitsu class.
Home now for relaxation.
Hope you all had a good one!
Apologise to absolutely nobody.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) November 13, 2020
As far as it goes, World Champ Champ Day is a fairly niche holiday in MMA. Since opening the door, only three other fighters have been able to replicate McGregor’s accomplishment: Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Henry Cejudo. The exclusivity of that group is why it’s such a highly respected accomplishment in the sport and as he was reminiscing on times gone by yesterday, McGregor lamented that he didn’t set the bar even higher.
Currently watching Woodley Wonderboy 1 on BT Sport. I should have went for that treble real quick. Pre Floyd.— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) November 13, 2020
Ah well, the game is still young.
McGregor is referring to claiming the welterweight belt, at the time held by Tyron Woodley. Woodley defended his title for the first time as the co-main event at UFC 205 against Stephen Thompson. At the weigh-ins, Woodley and McGregor had a tense moment that was seen by many as laying the groundwork for another champion vs. champion fight (or more accurately, a champion vs. champ champ fight). The two continued to flirt with the idea after McGregor won the lightweight title but ultimately, nothing ever came of it and Woodley was quick to call shenanigans on McGregor.
That didn’t break McGregor’s stride though who was having a grand old time celebrating and sent out a message of love to his fellow champ champs before finally signing off.

Good night everyone! And happy Friday the 13th muhahahaha— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) November 13, 2020
McGregor doesn’t have too much time to sit and reminisce though. Earlier this week, it was reported that a rematch between he and Dustin Poirier is close to being finalized for UFC 257 in January, and it has been heavily rumored that the bout will end up being for the lightweight title that champion Khabib Nurmagomedov left behind following his retirement from the sport.

It's the nature of the game. The rivalry will continue through our fighters and everyone will grow from it. Best of luck against anyone who isn't us. Pedro is strong.
