Alexa Grasso misses weight for UFC 246 by over five pounds, bout with Claudia Gadelha canceled

New, comments

For the second time in her young career, Alexa Grasso missed weight. It wasn’t close this time and it cost her.

Grasso weighed in at 121.5 pounds at Friday’s official weigh-ins for UFC 246, 5.5 pounds over the limit (including a one-pound allowance) for her strawweight bout opposite Claudia Gadelha, which has now been canceled. The two were set to compete on the main card this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Per the Nevada State Athletic Commission, flyweight combatants are only allowed a three-pound differential between them. Gadelha successfully weighed in at 115.5 pounds.

A bantamweight bout between Brian Kelleher and Ode Osbourne was moved from the preliminaries to the main card.

Grasso, 26, also came in heavy for an Aug. 5, 2017, bout against Randa Markos (weighing in at 119 pounds on that occasion). She went on to defeat Markos by split decision.

One other fighter was in danger of missing weight, flyweight Sabina Mazo. However, after initially weighing in at 126.25 pounds, Mazo was cleared by a physician to take an extra hour to make cut and when she returned, she successfully weighed in at 125.5 pounds (with the one-pound allowance).
