Morning Report: Coach John Kavanagh wants Conor McGregor to fight Frankie Edgar in his return bout

For the last few months, Conor McGregor has been hinting that he would finally be returning to the cage, including Tweeting that he’d like to fight on Dec. 14th in Dublin, Ireland. Then over the weekend, Dana White confirmed that the UFC was in negotiations with McGregor, saying that he would likely fight early in 2020. But with McGregor now seemingly set to actually return to fighting after an extended layoff following his four-round throttling at the hands of Khabib Nurmamagomedov, who will he face? Well, McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has an idea.

“I think him and Frankie Edgar would be a great fight,” Kavanagh said during an interview captured by The Mac Life recently (h/t “I think it was in the works when Conor was kind of going on that featherweight tear. He’s an ex-champion, great fighter. Yeah, if it was me, I would love to see the Frankie Edgar fight this year if possible. And then go on another run in 2020.”

This is not the first time Edgar and McGregor have been linked to one another. When McGregor won the featherweight title by knocking out Jose Aldo, Edgar was supposed to be his first title defense. Then earlier this summer, when discussing his return to the cage, McGregor mentioned Edgar by name as someone he’d be interested in fighting. Edgar had been making plans to actually drop down to 135 pounds, something fans have been calling for for years, but made it clear he’d be more than happy to put off that transition if it meant a McGregor fight. And that would work for Kavanagh who says he just really wants to see the two fight because it’s a great matchup.

“Frankie has a style that’s very difficult to deal with,” Kavanagh said. “But it’s also one we’re somewhat familiar with. Even from his first fight with [Marcus] Brimage. This small, fast guy, quick hands, wrestling. But Frankie’s just been in there with everybody. World champion, beaten legends like B.J. Penn and so on. I just think that’s a great match for the fans and for me. I’d love to see it.”

While it’s a good fight on paper, pursuing a bout with Edgar seems ot make less sense for McGregor than a fight with the surging Justin Gaethje (who McGregor seemed to be calling out with his Tweet referenced above). But this wouldn’t be the first time Kavanagh petitioned for a different fight than the general public wants. Kavanagh was one of the few people still holding out hope for McGregor-Diaz III when things began building up to the Mcgregor-Khabib lightweight title.

John Kavanagh, it seems, is not into the same kind of fights as the general public.
