Let the Cris Cyborg sweepstakes begin.
At UFC 240, Cris Cyborg fought out the last remaining fight on her UFC contract. Last week, UFC President Dana White revealed that the UFC would be waiving its contractually obligated matching period, effectively releasing Cyborg into the free-agent market three months earlier than expected. Bellator President Scott Coker (who previously worked with Cyborg in Strikeforce) wasted no time in saying he would be making an offer to the former UFC featherweight champion and now, one of the PFL’s leading stars and possible future opponent has also entered the game.
Kayla Harrison is among the best prospects in women’s MMA and one of the brightest stars for PFL. Speaking with TMZ Sports, Harrison suggested that Cyborg would fight in nicely with the PFL and said that the PFL can offer Cyborg something she can’t get anywhere else, an opponent who can actually beat her.
“I think that she would fit right in at the PFL,” Harrison said. “First of all it’s 155 pounds so she wouldn’t be dying to make the weight like she does at 145 and I think that there’s not really anybody else out there that’s gonna give her - I’m gonna beat Cris Cyborg if she comes to the PFL and I don’t think any other organization can offer her that. Plus it’s a win, you fight, you move on type of atmosphere so she’s not gonna have to worry about the promoters liking her or not liking her which seems to be a big problem for her. If you win, you get to continue.”
Harrison is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo, and though only 4-0 in MMA, her future appears to be bright. The PFL essentially built a women’s lightweight division specifically for her and so far she has not disappointed, cruising her way to the semifinals of their tournament. Even before she transitioned to MMA people discussed the possibility of a Harrison-Cyborg fight one day and now that she’s acclimated to the sport so well, those calls have only ramped up. But should it happen, Harrison says to expect more than a striker vs. grappler bout because she’s improving as a mixed martial artist everyday and is not overly impressed with Cyborg’s standup.
“I wouldn’t say it’s incredible striking,” Harrison says. “I’d say she’s big, she’s strong, she’s powerful but she doesn’t move her head, she comes straight forward, she’s definitely a brawler. My goal is to become the best MMA fighter in the world. It’s to become technical, it’s to become well-rounded so I’m working on all those details. I may not ever be the world’s best striker but I’m gonna be the world’s best MMA fighter and that means being able to put them all together in a very artistic fashion.”
Harrison’s callout of Cyborg is no surprise. The former Olympian has made her intentions to fight Cyborg clear since moving over to MMA, even throwing shade at Ronda Rousey in the process. And of course she would, a fight between Cyborg and Harrison is one of the biggest possible bouts in MMA right now and would put PFL, and Harrison, on the map in a way they have not been before. Plus, Harrison has made a habit out of succeeding on the biggest stages.
“Of course [I want that fight]! I shine brightest under the lights,” Harrison said. “The more pressure the better I do. There’s a reason I have two Olympic gold medals and it’s not a coincidence. I love the spotlight, I love to shine, I love the pressure. I feel like we grow at the edges of our experience and when we’re uncomfortable, is when we’re growing and that’s what I want to do. I want to be the best possible version of Kayla I can be.”
Before Harrison can be too concerned with Cyborg though, she has other business to attend to. Harrison is set to face Genah Fabian in the semifinals of the PFL women’s lightweight tournament on Oct. 11. Should she win that, then she’ll have a million-dollar fight in the finals. After that though, she’s hoping she might have another million-dollar fight lined up with Cyborg.
“Hi Cris, listen, I heard you lost your job but if you’re interested, the PFL has a very special place for you . . . it’s second.”
