UFC on ESPN 5 results: Gerald Meerschaert puts Trevin Giles to sleep with nasty guillotine choke

MMA: TUF 27 Finale-Meerschaert vs Piechota Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

Gerald Meerschaert now has 21 career submission wins following his latest victory on Saturday in New Jersey.

The veteran middleweight latched onto a nasty guillotine choke that forced Trevin Giles to tap out but unfortunately referee Herb Dean didn’t see it. A few seconds later, Meerschaert put Giles to sleep with the choke and this time Dean saw the arm go limp, which then caused the stoppage at 1:49 into the third and final round.

“I felt him tap a couple of times and told Herb he was out because he couldn’t see it,” Meerschaert said afterwards. “I’m trying to give the fans what they want and what they want is finishes.”

It was a back and forth battle throughout the first 10 minutes with Giles willing to engage in several grappling exchanges with Meerschaert on the ground despite his string of submission wins.

The fighters were constantly locked in scrambles on the mat with Meerschaert reversing his way into the mount but then Giles finding a way to escape to land back on top himself.

Those same kinds of ground exchanges continued throughout the contest with neither fighter really gaining a definitive upper hand.

With five minutes remaining, Meerschaert seized on a momentary lapse from Giles that left his neck open for the choke and he immediately slipped his arm under the chin and started cranking away on the guillotine.

Giles tried valiantly to escape but Meerschaert wasn’t letting go until he finally rendered his opponent unconscious, which is what ultimately stopped the fight.

It was a much needed win for Meerschaert, who had dropped his last two fights in a row and he now moves his UFC record to 5-3 including four submissions inside the Octagon.
