Colby Covington has shown unwavering support for President Donald Trump and now he hopes to help get him re-elected in 2020.
The outspoken former interim UFC welterweight champion brings up President Trump quite often on social media and during his interviews, which eventually led to a meeting at the White House last year.
Covington was invited to meet the President alongside UFC president Dana White, who has called Trump a friend for more than a decade.
That meeting only increased Covington’s support for President Trump and now his sons — Donald Jr. and Eric Trump — are scheduled to sit cage side for his upcoming fight this weekend in Newark, N.J. when he faces Robbie Lawler in the main event.
From there, Covington believes the Trump family will once again show their support in November if he gets the opportunity to face Kamaru Usman for the welterweight titl at UFC 244, which will be held in Madison Square Garden in New York.
“Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have already given me their word that they’re going to be at my fight,” Covington told MMA Fighting. “To see them front row just gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. It gives me a jolt of energy in my body. They’ve got that dragon energy. They’re winners. They’ve been winning for America. Our economy is better than ever. We have more jobs than there has ever been. They are doing a great job for America and that’s what I’m planning on doing.
“I’m trying to follow in their footsteps. It would be such an incredible thing to go to MSG, which is right down the street from Trump Tower, go put my title on the line and defend it right in front of them.”
If that wasn’t enough, Covington also wants to support President Trump in his re-election campaign 2020 by appearing on his behalf at the Republican National Convention.
When Trump was running for office in 2016, White actually appeared at the convention and gave a speech in favor of electing the former reality TV star to the highest office in the land.
Now Covington would like to follow suit and he hints that there have already been talks about him making an appearance at the convention next year.
“That would be a bigger spotlight or any opportunity could ever bring me,” Covington said. “It would be such an honor to speak on President Trump’s behalf at the [Republican National Convention]. I look forward to it. I think there’s a real possibility.
“There’s been talks about it and I might already be planning on doing something like that. I’m going to go get this win and then maybe you’ll see me at the RNC next year.”
