Sergio Pettis is in need for a new opponent for UFC Mexico City after Alex Perez suffered an injury.
A “heartbroken” Perez announced on his social media that he won’t be able to face Pettis at the UFC Fight Night card scheduled for Sept. 21 at Mexico City’s Arena Ciudad de Mexico.
“I’m so heartbroken to announce that I have to pull out of my fight in September,” Perez wrote. “Due to an injury. This was a hard decision but can’t risk injuring myself more. I want to apologize to everyone friends family and all my sponsors! Thanks for the support, I’ll be back better than ever!”
Perez (22-5), who joined the promotion after submitting Kevin Gray in the first round at Dana White’s Contender Series in 2017, won four of his five bouts inside the Octagon since. In his most recent appearance in March, Perez defeated Mark De La Rosa via decision.
Pettis (17-5) returned to the 135-pound weight class in December after a 5-3 run as a flyweight, but lost a decision to Rob Font. The younger brother of Anthony Pettis was scheduled to return against Ricardo Ramos in June, but was forced out of card with an injury.
UFC Mexico City will be headlined by Yair Rodriguez vs. Jeremy Stephens.
