Dana White on potential Amanda Nunes vs. Claressa Shields fight: ‘Anything’s possible’

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Dana White has already helped one UFC champion crossover for a boxing mega-fight and he’s not completely opposed to doing it again for the right matchup.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist and undefeated boxer Claressa Shields mentioned the possibility of testing herself against reigning two-division UFC champion Amanda Nunes.

The 24-year old middleweight boxing champion even hinted at a pair of fights — one in boxing and the second in mixed martial arts — to test herself against arguably the greatest women’s fighter in history in Nunes.

After watching Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather produce the second biggest pay-per-view in history, the UFC president said he wasn’t rushing to put anymore of his fighters into the boxing ring but he may have had a change of heart.

On Tuesday when asked about the possibility of Shields facing Nunes in the future, White wouldn’t shut it down despite the fact that he’s not really looking to cross promote any UFC fighters against boxers again.

“I’m not [interested] but I would never say no,” White responded. “If Amanda Nunes continues on her reign and continues, anything is possible. Anything’s possible that we could do with her.”

At 9-0, Shields is already considered one of the top women’s boxers in the world at any weight class and she has previously trained with former UFC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg.

After posting a quote that stated “you need a goal that scares you just a little bit”, Shields continued to fuel those rumors about pursuing a fight with Nunes in the UFC.

“This quote is really making me consider trying the UFC!” Shields wrote. “I had this weird feeling about turning pro a few years ago and I stumbled up on this quote and decided to do it!

“And then yesterday this same quote reappeared! With all this talk about me and Nunes I had that same feeling.”

Nunes has run roughshod over the entire bantamweight division in the UFC with wins over Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, and Holly Holm not to mention her 51-second knockout against Cris Cyborg when they met at 145 pounds last year.

While it’s a long way from being official, White isn’t shutting down the possibility of Nunes facing Shields in the future, which will only lead to further speculation that it could happen one day.
