Morning Report: Dana White says Cris Cyborg is ‘afraid to lose again’ against Amanda Nunes

Dana White sure does have an interesting way of promoting his fighters.

This weekend, Cris Cyborg makes her return to the octagon for the first time since losing her UFC featherweight title to Amanda Nunes last December. The former champion will be taking on undefeated featherweight Felicia Spencer in the co-main event at UFC 240. And while normally you’d expect the President of the UFC to be promoting the woman about to co-headline a Pay-Per-View event, instead UFC President Dana White is calling into question the mettle of his former featherweight champion.

Speaking recently with TMZ Sports, White addressed what would be next for Nunes, saying that the current champ-champ wants a rematch with Cyborg but that he believes Cyborg doesn’t want to take the fight.

“She wants Cyborg,” White said. “She wants the Cyborg fight. I don’t think Cyborg wants that fight. I think it’s pretty obvious why she wouldn’t want that fight: it’s not a good fight for her. It’s a bad fight for her, and I get it.”

That last part, at least, has proven to be true. When the two met at UFC 232, Nunes ran through Cyborg in only 51 seconds. However, since then, Cyborg has repeatedly made it clear that she wants the rematch, even calling for it immediately after her loss. It was White who wasn’t interested in running the fight back. Since then, Cyborg and White have been embroiled in a public feud with White saying Cyborg refused a rematch offer and Cyborg saying that is completely untrue.

Still, with a title shot presumptively on the line this weekend, you might think the leading MMA promoter would be promoting one of his biggest draws, but instead he opined that Cyborg is afraid of losing again so she is refusing to fight Nunes - something that surely makes her bout with Felicia Spencer seem fraught with peril and worth paying $65 for. He did, however, imply that should Cyborg beat Spencer this weekend, the UFC is still interested in doing the Nunes rematch next.

“I don’t think she’s afraid,” White said. “She’s been fighting for a long time and I think she’s at the point where she’s afraid to lose again. Losing again isn’t something she’s interested in.

“She doesn’t want to fight her. Amanda wants it, we want it, she doesn’t want it.”

Cris Cyborg faces Felicia Spencer in the co-main event of UFC 240 this Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
