Their first encounter lasted just 15 seconds, so Matt Mitrione and Sergei Kharitonov are getting another 15 minutes to make things right.
Mitrione (13-6, 1 NC) and Kharitonov (28-6, 2 NC) will face off in the main event of an upcoming Aug. 24 Bellator show at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, officials announced Friday. This will be a rematch of their Bellator 215 headlining bout from this past February that ended in a no contest.
The two veteran heavyweights barely got out of the gate when an errant inside leg kick from Mitrione caught Kharitonov between the legs, leaving him in agony on the mat. Kharitonov was unable to continue and the bout was called off, leaving the fans in attendance in Uncasville, Connecticut, sorely disappointed.
A former UFC fighter, Mitrione won his first four fights in Bellator before dropping a unanimous decision to Ryan Bader in the semifinals of the World Heavyweight Grand Prix and then having his ill-fated clash with Kharitonov.
Kharitonov is unbeaten in his last seven fights competing for Bellator and promotions in Russia, including a pair of no contests.
