Top UFC featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski is in good spirits after experiencing some unexpected complications in the wake of his win over Jose Aldo at UFC 237 this past weekend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Shortly after Volkanovski’s fight, his manager Rhys Dal Cin sent out a statement explaining that instead of flying home to Australia, Volkanovski was at a hospital in Santiago, Chile, being treated for an infection.

Volkanovski provided a positive update on his situation Friday via an Instagram video, saying that the infection is being treated and that the worst appears to be over.

Chile hospital update

“We got good news this morning that the infection’s starting to go down now,” Volkanovski said. “That’s good because it was pretty nasty before, the infection was pretty bad, cellulitis, bacterial infection. That was my ankle, foot, and leg, it was just very, very swollen and the inflammation was pretty bad, the infection was pretty bad too.

“But we were worried about it being in the tendons. We got the message this morning that it’s not in any of the tendons, so that’s very, very good. It will be all smooth sailing from now, I think. I’m still getting fevers here and there, but that’s just normal. The worst is done, which is good.”

Volkanovski praised the hospital for taking care of him and added that he expects to be in Chile for a couple more days before heading back to Australia for his best friend’s wedding.

He also made sure to include a couple of angles of his left foot to show how his recovery was coming along.
