Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar in the works for UFC 240 in Edmonton

Frankie Edgar is getting his shot to dethrone “Blessed.”

In what is essentially a re-booking of two previously aborted encounters, featherweight champion Max Holloway (20-4) and Edgar (23-6-1) have verbally agreed to face one another at UFC 240, which will take place at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, on July 27. MMA Fighting’s Shaun Al-Shatti confirmed the bout with sources following an initial report by ESPN.

This will be Holloway’s return to 145 pounds after attempting to capture an interim lightweight title this past April at UFC 236. Holloway dropped a five-round unanimous decision to Dustin Poirier, but prior to that he’d won 13 consecutive bouts including title fight victories over Brian Ortega, Jose Aldo (twice), and Anthony Pettis.

The 27-year-old Holloway will be competing for the fourth time in Canada, where he is 3-0. He defeated Charles Oliveira by TKO back in August 2015 at a Fight Night in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, when Oliveira suffered a neck injury, and later won PPV bouts against Ortega and Pettis in Toronto, a city that Holloway has made a second home.

Edgar and Holloway have twice been scheduled to fight already, at UFC 218 on Dec. 2, 2017 and at UFC 222 on March 3, 2018. The first meeting was derailed by an injury to Edgar, the second by an injury to Holloway. Edgar would instead go on to fight Ortega at UFC 222, where Ortega became the first fighter to KO Edgar.

The former UFC lightweight champion would bounce back with a unanimous decision win over Cub Swanson in a rematch at UFC Atlantic City last April.

In two previous attempts to win the UFC featherweight title, Edgar lost a pair of unanimous decisions to Aldo.
