This is the UFC Fort Lauderdale live blog for Ronaldo Souza vs. Jack Hermansson, the middleweight main event at Saturday’s UFC event at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla

Souza, a former Strikeforce champion, is coming off a violent knock out over Chris Weidman at UFC 230 in November 2018. That win moved “Jacare” back to the winning column after a split-decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum last May.

Hermansson is coming off a 49-second TKO over former WSOF champion David Branch in Philadelphia just two weeks ago. This performance extended his win streak to three straight, which includes Gerald Meerschaert and Thales Leites.

Round 1

Souza immediately plants himself in the center of the Octagon as Hermansson slaps in a series of leg kicks. Souza calmly plods forward, looking for an opening. Both fighters connect with looping right hooks to the jaw. Eating an inside leg kick, Souza rushes forward but can’t contain Hermansson with the clinch. Souza pushes forward again but finds himself on the receiving end of a flurry of punches to the jaw. With his opponent stumbling forward, Hermansson drops down and locks on a guillotine. Souza escapes but can’t break from Hermansson as he’s shoved into the fence.

Finally breaking free, Souza circles away as Hermansson continues to push the attack as the clock ticks away.

Round 2

Hermansson looks to pick up right where he left off as he Souza remains on the outside. Souza close the gap and connect with a hard shot to the body. Hermansson ducks under and drags Souza down to the canvas. Working from Souza’s guard, Hermansson is trying desperately to pass to a superior position.

The crowd is not happy as Souza finds himself stuck on his back as Hermansson batters him with short punches.

Round 3

Hermansson goes right back to work with his lead inside leg kick. A lethargic Souza slowly makes his way around the Octagon as Hermansson continues to look for strikes. Picking up the pace, Souza slows Hermansson’s attack with a barrage of punches to the body. Hermansson responds with a flurry of his own but eats a hard left hook to the jaw.

Hermansson is back peddling now as he’s shoved away. Souza is opening up with strikes as he wears Hermansson down with more hooks to the body. Hermansson clinches up but can’t find much offense as Souza snaps in a straight right to the jaw. Souza drops Hermansson with another barrage as the horn signals the end of the round.

Round 4

Right out the gate, Hermansson shoots in for a takedown but is immediately spiked into the canvas. Souza breaks free and connect with knee. Hermansson responds with a left high kick followed by a right uppercut to the jaw. Souza is hurt bad as Hermansson throws a hurricane of strikes against the fence. Catching his breath, Hermansson picks up the pace again with a superman punch in the center of the Octagon. With two minutes left, Hermansson connects with another skulling rattling uppercut. Souza responds with a pair of straight rights to Hermansson’s temple. Hermansson avoids more damage by clinching up against the fence. Souza escapes and momentarily stuns Hermansson with one-two combo.

Round 5

Hermansson sprints out his corner and immediately drags Souza to the canvas. Souza climbs back to his feet but doesn’t mount any offense as Hermansson continues to pop in jabs to the nose.

Souza finally manages to a one strike to the body with three minutes left but Hermansson shows no signs of damage as he slaps in another one-two combo before circling away. Souza connects with a left hook, giving him an opening to rip more punches to the body followed by an overhand right. Hermansson clinches up by Souza goes to the body once again, forcing Hermansson to break free. Dropping in for the takedown, Hermansson drops down and secures the takedown as the round comes to a close.
