With one “Straw” out, the other will fill in on short notice.
Angela Hill will replace her teammate — and “Two Straws” podcast co-host — Jessica Penne in a women’s strawweight fight against Jodie Esquibel at UFC Fort Lauderdale on April 27, the UFC announced Friday. MMA DNA was the first to report the news.
Penne was initially supposed to fight Esquibel in her comeback bout after an absence of almost two years at UFC Phoenix in February, but injured her ankle the morning of the event and was forced to pull out. Now it appears the fight won’t happen as scheduled yet again.
Hill (8-6), a friend and training partner of Penne’s at Alliance MMA in San Diego, is coming off a first-round submission loss to Randa Markos last month at UFC Nashville. The former Invicta FC strawweight champion has lost two straight. Hill, 32, won four in a row in Invicta after her first UFC stint, but has gone 2-5 in her return to the UFC since 2017.
Esquibel (6-4) has also lost two in a row, the most recent defeat coming against Jessica Aguilar at UFC Boise last July. The Albuquerque, N.M., native is also an Invicta veteran who competed at both atomweight and strawweight in that promotion. Esquibel, 32, is still looking for her first UFC victory.
UFC Fort Lauderdale is headlined by a middleweight bout between Ronaldo Souza and Jack Hermansson. Also on the card, Mike Perry meets Alex Oliveira and former NFL star Greg Hardy returns after being disqualified in his UFC debut due to an illegal knee. The main card will air on the ESPN+ digital streaming platform.
