The summer of Cowboy? It just might be.
Donald Cerrone said during a fan Q&A this weekend at UFC 234 weigh-ins in Melbourne, Australia that he’s fighting Conor McGregor this summer. On Instagram later, “Cowboy” wrote that the bout will be for the interim lightweight title.
“It’s definitely gonna be this year,” Cerrone said on stage, answering an Irish fan’s question. “This summer, I think, right? Hey, Irish, Australian, American. F*ckin’ root for whoever you want. I’m going in there to fight. I love it, man. I don’t care — boo, cheer.”
Another fan asked Cerrone to give a prediction of how that fight would end.
“How about second-round head kick?” Cerrone said.
Cerrone, 35, has won two straight fights via finish and after his win at UFC Brooklyn last month he politely called out McGregor. “The Notorious” responded on Twitter that after the performance “Cowboy” put on in a second-round TKO of Alexander Hernandez, he’d gladly do the fight. UFC president Dana White, too, has expressed interest in it happening. However, nothing is official.
If it does happen, Cerrone is promising a banger — a stand-up war. He said in Melbourne that he will not try to wrestle McGregor, which was the Irish superstar’s bugaboo in a loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 back in October.
“I’m just gonna go out there and fight my ass off,” Cerrone said. “Man, I really am. I’m definitely gonna stand and fight him. I’m not gonna try to wrestle him. I’m gonna f*ckin’ stand and give y’all want you want to see.”
