Two former strawweight champions are set to collide.
MMA Fighting confirmed with sources that Carla Esparza (13-6) will meet Livinha Souza (13-1) in a 115-pound bout at UFC on ESPN 3 on April 27 at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. The bout was first reported by Combate. The card will be billed UFC Fort Lauderdale.
Esparza was both the inaugural Invicta FC and UFC strawweight champion, having defeated Bec Rawlings for the former, and Rose Namajunas for the latter in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter 20 tournament in 2014. She has lost her last two fights, most recently being finished via TKO by Tatiana Suarez at UFC 228, a result that dropped Esparza’s UFC record to 4-4.
So far, Souza has yet to taste defeat inside the Octagon. She won the Invicta FC title back in April 2015 and successfully defended it once before dropping it to Angela Hill. Souza has won her last two, a split decision over Sarah Frota and a first-round submission over Alex Chambers.
