UFC Phoenix results: Andre Fili outpoints Myles Jury in standup duel

Score the latest installment of longstanding California rivalry between San Diego’s Alliance MMA vs. Sacramento’s Team Alpha Male for the latter gym.

TAM’s Andre Fili got the best of Alliance’s Myles Jury in the main-card featherweight opener at UFC Phoenix on Sunday night, as he was more active in what was essentially a kickboxing match, which was good enough to secure the unanimous decision. The judges’ scores were 29-28 across the board at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

I would have liked to do a little more, but the jab was working, and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Fili said.

The opening round saw Fili more active, as he established his jab, including one which appeared to bust Jury’s nose, and also found a home with an occasional overhand right. Jury picked up the pace a bit over the final minute, including a connection on a spinning back fist, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the first four minutes.

In the second round, the pace went back and forth and seemed to be a coin flip of a round until Jury landed another backfist and dropped him this time. Jury scored some offense from the top and went into full mount, but wasn’t able to work into a finish position from there.

“I wasn’t hurt, I just have these giant, weird feet and I stumbled over them,” Fili said about getting dropped.

Fili resumed picking up the pace in the third, using his jab to stifle Jury’s output as the latter wasn’t able to get untracked in the final round, marking the difference in an otherwise tight fight.

With his eighth career decision victory, Fili (19-6) has now won three of his past four contests. Jury (17-4) has lost two in a row.
