Israel Adesanya knocked out Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 to become the undisputed middleweight champion and his first title defense was supposed to come against Paulo Costa, who had just won a close decision against Yoel Romero at UFC 241. But last week Costa revealed he had to have bicep surgery and would not be able to fight until next Spring. In response, Romero called out Adesanya and, as recently as yesterday, Adesanya voiced his desire to fight Romero in the interim, preferably early in 2020. But Dana White isn’t so sure.
Speaking with Adam’s Apple, White said that he wants Romero to get a win before he gets a fight with Adesanya.
“[Adesanya] wants to fight Yoel Romero,” White said. “He wants Romero. So we’re talking about giving Romero a fight coming up soon here and then (Adesanya) will fight the winner of that fight.”
White’s reticence to throw Romero right into a title shot likely comes from Romero’s recent run. “The Soldier of God” is 1-3 in his last four fights, and missed weight for two title fights. However, White’s plan for Romero to fight before getting a title shot doesn’t exactly work with the timelines, especially if Costa will be ready to go by April like he says. But White addressed Costa’s claims he’d be back that soon, which contradict White’s own statements that Costa would be sidelined for eight months.
“Costa tore his bicep so he had to have surgery,” White said. “He’s claiming that he will be back sooner than he will be. That’s not what the doctor is telling me, so that’s not true.”
Even so, it’s hard to imagine Romero getting a win and turning around to face Adesanya at the champion’s preferred time so something has got to give here.

SOCIAL MEDIA BOUILLABAISSE
This is absurdist theater.
All you fake media personalities I see you! Making up fake stories now are we? ... I see you and I notice everything.— #OnAmission4Gold (@KelvinGastelum) November 4, 2019
For example, idk who made up the fact that I called Daren a stepping stone. Someone made that up! Someone put words in my mouth that I never said! And all of you eat it right up!— #OnAmission4Gold (@KelvinGastelum) November 4, 2019
I did say that he was a stepping stone on the promo lol but the point I’m making is the media has so much control over what YOU All hear and know. Or think you know. And things get blown out of context. And you eat it right up. And it is a bit upsetting ppl are so gullable.— #OnAmission4Gold (@KelvinGastelum) November 4, 2019
I did say it!!! But that’s not my point!!— #OnAmission4Gold (@KelvinGastelum) November 4, 2019

I started at the lowest of lows. Just a 13 year old kid being bullied in high school. Joined a boxing gym to learn how to fight, but little did I know how I would fall in love with fighting in the way that I have. I set out a goal to be a pro fighter I wanted to be on tv one day. So my father said, “Put God first in everything you do and you can do it.” I followed his foot steps like I was taught. I accomplished what I set out to do. SPREAD GODS WORD ON THE BIGGEST MMA PLATFORM. I grew up to the man that I am today because of him keeping me on the right path with God’s word..............the point of this long story is because I have been released from the UFC Now there’s good news and bad. . Good news first —I have been set up with the best gym in the world, Factory X, with a legendary coach, Marc Montoya, and with Jason House, the best management team in the world, Team Iridium. . I will be back in the regional scene with a sponsorship banner, so get with me on sponsorships........which leads me to bad news — Now that I won’t be making the big pay check, I will be back to working and saving up for my training camps back in Colorado. . GOD’S PLAN NOT MINE ♂️
