Morning Report: Tyson Fury responds to Stipe Miocic’s challenge to box him

Recently, Tyson Fury has been making overtures into the MMA world, saying that he’d like to compete in the UFC at some point. Then, over the weekend Fury made headlines when footage was released of the heavyweight boxing champion training MMA techniques with Darren Till. That footage, and the implication that Fury was serious about MMA, prompted a round of callouts from a number of notable UFC heavyweights, including UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic who said he’d not only be willing to fight Fury, he’d also like to box him. Well apparently that sounds okay to “The Gypsy King.”

“Stipe says he wants to box me, that would be a good fight for sure,” Fury said in a statement released by his management team, MTK Global. “After I get [Deontay] Wilder out of the way, I’ll fight Stipe in a boxing match if he wants it. It would be a big crossover fight like Mayweather and McGregor.”

Fury and Wilder fought for the WBC and lineal heavyweight titles last year in a bout that ended in a draw. The two were expected to rematch immediately but instead both have taken other fights and are now anticipated to be facing each other in early 2020. After that though, Fury says he’s open to boxing matches with any of the UFC fighters who have called him out.

“I’m open to that fight so he should come and see me,” Fury said. “It would be the same outcome for any of them, they’ll all get smashed.”

Then of course there is still the matter of MMA. Fury has recently been branching out, having made the jump to professional wrestling earlier this year and the heavyweight champion still has his sights set on MMA eventually. Fury has previously called for a fight from Dana White, and after getting a taste of MMA training with Darren Till, it sounds like he’s still interested in crossing over.

“It was exciting training with Darren Till and we get on like a house on fire,” Fury said. “He put me through a hard training session and it was really good.”
