Flyweight contender Sergio Pettis is currently exploring his options after fighting out his most recent UFC contract.

Sources close to the 26-year old fighter confirmed to MMA Fighting that he’s currently exploring his free agency options but remains “in talks” with the UFC on a new deal. The news of Pettis’ free agency was first reported by ESPN.

Pettis was initially rumored for a fight against fellow flyweight Kai-Kara France but that matchup was scrapped when he wasn’t able to come to terms with the UFC on a new deal.

Still, Pettis remains in conversation with the UFC, although as of right now he still hasn’t put pen to paper on a new contract.

Pettis was stuck in limbo between weight classes prior to his most recent win over Tyson Nam as rumors swirled that the UFC was considering dumping the flyweight division. Once those rumors were put to rest, Pettis returned to a more natural 125 pounds where he earned a victory in late September.

Pettis is 6-3 over his past nine fights in the UFC including wins over top ranked contender Joseph Benavidez, Brandon Moreno and former title challenger John Moraga.

While the flyweight division has been rescued, the division still isn’t flush in numbers so Pettis remains a key asset as the UFC moves forward with fighters competing at 125 pounds.
