Bellator 214 fight night weights: After Aaron Pico KO, Henry Corrales needs physician clearance to continue at 145

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

The path toward a title shot for Henry Corrales will be somewhat obstructed.

The Bellator fighter will need clearance from a physician to continue fighting at featherweight, per a document from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) obtained Wednesday by MMA Fighting. CSAC doctors found that Corrales had an “excessive” weight cut prior to his big 67-second knockout of Aaron Pico in the co-main event of Bellator 214 last Saturday night in Inglewood, Calif.

Corrales, who has now won five straight, gained back 14.8 percent of the contracted weight from the weigh-ins to fight night, per CSAC data. He weighed 167.6 pounds at Bellator 214 for the 146-pound limit bout. Pico weighed 159 pounds, an increase of 8.9 percent.

CSAC regulations state that any fighter who gains more than 10 percent above the contracted weight on fight night can be told to move up to a heavier division unless he or she is cleared by a doctor.

Corrales was not the biggest weight gainer last weekend. That was David Pacheco, who fought at 184.7 for a contracted 156-pound fight, an increase of of 18.4 percent. Pacheco, per CSAC, will have to come before the commission’s medical advisory committee for a hearing if he wishes to continue fighting at lightweight.

Pacheco beat Jorge Juarez by first-round TKO on the postlims of the Bellator 214 card. He outweighed Juarez (153.8 pounds) by nearly 31 pounds on fight night.

Weber Almeida will also need a hearing before the medical advisory committee in order to continue fighting in his current weight class. Almeida, who beat Odan Chinchilla by first-round knockout, gained back 15.7 percent over the contracted 136-pound weight last Saturday. He weighed 157.4 pounds in the cage, compared to Chinchilla’s 142.

Juan Archuleta must get physician clearance before competing again at bantamweight. Archuleta, who has fought at lightweight and featherweight, weighed 156 pounds on fight night for the 136-pound contracted bout, an increase of 14.7%. He defeated Ricky Bandejas, who weighed 146.2 pounds on fight night, by unanimous decision on the main card.

Ryan Lilley, who defeated James Barnes by first-round knockout, was given a warning by CSAC for coming into fight night 12.6 percent above the contracted 136-pound limit.
