UFC 228 results: Zabit Magomedsharipov submits Brandon Davis

Brandon Davis was a plucky underdog on Saturday night, a former Contender Series competitor who found himself fighting a monster in Dagestan’s Zabit Magomedsharipov.

But the talent difference was simply too much to overcome. After a cautious opening round, Magomedsharipov poured it on in the second round before scoring a kneebar from the back mount and getting the tap. The time of the finish in the featherweight main card bout at UFC 228 in Dallas was 3:46.

The Dagestani turned things up in round two, attacking like an angry wolverine. Magomedsharipov got Davis’ back, softened him up with knees and punches, and got him to the mat. Davis got back to his feet but couldn’t shake his foe.

The finishing sequence was a thing of beauty, as Magomedsharipov, still on Davis’ back, tucked his head, rolled his foe over, swftly applied the kneebar, and cranked until Davis had no choice but to surrender.

“My opponent keeps saying I have problems with my grappling, Magomedsharipov said through an interpreter, “and I have to prove that i have no problem with my grappling.”

Davis (9-5) was a short-notice replacement for Yair Rodriguez, whom Magomedsharipov still hopes to face.

“Of course I was frustrated and I was afraid they would not come up with an opponent, but I say thank you to the UFC for finding an opponent and thanks to Brandon Davis for taking the fight,” the winner said. “I hope Yair is ready to go.”

Magomedsharipov improved to 16-1 with his seventh career submission and 13th career finish. He’s 4-0 in the UFC.
