If Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones are headed towards a third fight, they’ve already put in plenty of promotional work.

Despite Cormier holding out for a heavyweight title fight with Brock Lesnar next year, and Jones’s status unclear after recently being handed a retroactive 15-month suspension from the USADA that will be cleared by the end of October, the longtime rivals haven’t been able to stop themselves from sniping at each other over social media.

Earlier this month, Cormier had a flippant response to the news Jones would be receiving a reduced penalty after going through arbitration for a second failed drug test. He questioned the effectiveness of the USADA program and said that he had “moved past” his feud with Jones. The two have fought twice in high-profile bouts, with Jones successfully defending the light heavyweight championship via unanimous decision at UFC 182, then winning as the challenger at UFC 214 via third-round knockout. However, the latter result became a no-contest (and the title was returned to Cormier’s waist) when Jones later tested positive for a banned substance.

After Cormier posted a joke on social media about himself ignoring USADA’s calls, Jones went on the offensive, accusing Cormier of not wanting to accept that he is “innocent” and referring to Cormier’s light heavyweight title as a “fake belt”.

Cormier responded in kind on Instagram, referencing Jones’s failed tests, posting pictures of his mug shots and appearances in court for various legal infractions, and calling him a “snitch” due to the fact that a USADA release stated that “Jones’ delivery of substantial assistance” played a part in his receiving a reduced sentence.

“So here we go again Jonny boy. First off, if you did nothing wrong and were ‘innocent’ then you’d have never been suspended. You’ve had to stand before these people and arbitrators so many times it’s insane. So you slipped again, how many times can one man slip?

“I’ve been tested 70 times and I haven’t slipped once. How do you explain that? And on top of all the cheating you’ve done around UFC 182, UFC 200 and UFC 214 that’s not even the straw that broke the camel’s back. You are actually a SNITCH!

“You think you’re the only one that’s been offered this deal? No, you’re just the only scumbag low enough to take it! Which one of your teammates did you tell on to get this joke of a punishment from USADA! I thought there was nothing lower than a cheater but it’s not surprising that you show me a whole new level. You’re a cheater and a SNITCH! Get off my page and go do some coke, or steroids or whatever you losers do in your spare time.”
