Dana White Contender Series had its first special season taped earlier this month in Las Vegas, and the first previously recorded fights aired Friday night in Brazil.

(Contender Series Brazil will be aired on UFC Fight Pass on a later date, so this post contains spoilers.)

Thirty Brazilian talents were selected to fight for a chance to sign a contract with the UFC, and four fighters were successful in their attempts to impress Dana White and Hall of Famer Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first of three episodes.

Mayra Bueno, Augusto Sakai, Sarah Frota and Rogerio Bontorin were all signed by the president of the UFC.

Mayra Bueno (4-0) was one of the stars of the first episode. The Chute Boxe athlete took on previously unbeaten Mayana Kellem (7-1) in a bantamweight bout, and won in a mere 62 seconds. Kellem backed Bueno against the cage, going for a single leg position, and Bueno locked in a tight anaconda choke to put her opponent to sleep.

In the heavyweight division, Bellator veteran Augusto Sakai (11-1-1) handed Marcos Conrado his first professional loss in Las Vegas. The 27-year-old heavyweight, who went 4-1-1 under the Bellator banner, knocked Conrado down in the opening round but the finish only came in the second round after dropping him with a right hand and landing a series of punches on the ground on a gassed Conrado.

Undefeated strawweight Sarah Frota (9-0) entered the Octagon to rematch Maiara Amanajas (7-3), who she beat via first-round submission in February, obliterating her in the striking area before knocking her out at 3:26 of the first round, scoring the seventh stoppage victory of her career. It impressed White and “Minotauro.”

The fourth talent signed by the UFC was 26-year-old Rogerio Bontorin, who choked out Gustavo Gabriel (13-1) with seconds left in the second round to improve to 14-1 and one no-contest in his professional career with his 11th submission finish.

Gabriel had Bontorin badly hurt standing in the second round, coming close to finishing the fight in multiple occasions, but Bontorin was able to survive, throw him on the ground, take his back and lock in a standing rear-naked choke to submit his opponent in one of the best comebacks of the year.

The only victorious fighter not signed by the UFC was Antonio Arroyo. The middleweight took the fight on short notice and defeated Diego Henrique (8-4, 1 no-contest) via unanimous decision, improving to 9-2 as a professional fighter.

Henrique lost all three rounds and was deducted a point in the second round after an illegal elbow to the back of the head and a couple of eye pokes. After the fight, Arroyo said his opponent “played dirty” and said it’s a matter of time before he signs with the UFC.
