Combate Americas is taking a novel approach to qualifiers for its second Copa Combate tournament.
The MMA promotion will hold a pair of one-round qualifying bouts as part of its live Univision broadcast on Fri. Sept. 28 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif.
In a pair of featherweight matchups, Erick Gonzalez will meet Andres Quintana and Pablo Sabori will take on Alejandro Flores for one, five-minute round. The winners will advance to the one-night, $100,000 Copa Combate tourney, which will be held at a date and venue to be determined.
Gonzalez (7-2), of Redondo Beach, Calif., has won five of his past six bouts and two in a row. He’s dropping down from lightweight for the bout. Quintana (14-2), of Roswell, N.M., is on a four-fight win streak, with all four fights coming in Combate Americas.
Sabori (8-0), of Sonora, Mexico, has won all eight of his pro bouts via finish, five of them coming within the first round. He’ll fight Flores (12-1), of Monterrey, Mexico, who is coming up from 135 pounds and has also won four in a row.
The first Copa Combate one-night tourney was held last Nov. 11. Levy Saul Marroquin won the bantamweight tournament by winning three fights.
