If the rest of the UFC strawweight division thought Joanna Jedrzejczyk was going to just step aside and let someone else take the No. 1 contender’s position, well, they got a rude awakening on Saturday night.

Jedrzejczyk’s only two career defeats were to current champion Rose Namajunas, but she’s been flawless against everyone else. The native of Poland looked sharp at Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome as she cruised to a unanimous decision over Tecia Torres.

The judges’ scores at UFC on FOX 30 were 30-27 across the board.

There had been much speculation in the MMA world that Jedrzejczyk should go up to 125 pounds, and indeed, she appeared to be two weight classes bigger in the cage than Torres, her former American Top Team campmate.

That size differential showed over the course of the first two rounds, as the former champion slowly wore her opponent down in the clinch. There was a wild exchange between the duo in the second round’s closing moments, and that presaged the action opening up in the final round.

But it was all Jedrzejczyk in the final five minutes, as she pushed the pace, landed front kicks and combos, and never let Torres get back into the bout.

Getting back into the win column was clearly a big deal for the former titleholder, coming off back-to-back losses to Namajunas.

“That was an important fight for me and for and the UFC,” Jedrzejczyk (15-2) said. “I cannot wait to rise ot the top again I am determined to be the best and win again.”

Torres (10-3) lost her second straight bout.
