UFC on FOX 30 results: Jordan Mein earns decision victory over Alex Morono

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Jordan Mein is still just 28 years old. And yet he’s been through enough in his career already that you can say that on Saturday night, he looked like his old self.

The Lethbridge, Alberta native thrilled the crowd in Calgary with his performance at UFC on FOX 30, as the welterweight had two strong rounds, and then passed a nice gut check in surviving Morono’s surge in the third, as he held on for the win. Mein earned a unanimous decision across-the-board scores of 29-28.

Mein set the tone in the opening round, as he countered Morono’s agressive-but-wild offensive by wrangling his opponent to the mat, first with a sweet sweep into a trip and second with a more standard takedown. In the second, Mein once again countered his opponent’s charge by taking things to the mat and working from top position.

Morono knew he needed a finish, and went for broke in the third round. But Mein, who went through a period in his career in which he cracked under pressure, stuck with things, got out of a guillotine choke, and shut Morono down over the final minute to seal the victory.

With the victory, Mein (31-12), who retired for two years before making his return in 2016, won his second consecutive fight.

“He was a very tough opponent,” Mein said after his eighth career decision victory. “I wanted to win quick, it didn’t happen but I got the win.”

Morono fell to 14-5 as the Houston native lost for the second time in his past three bouts.
