UFC on FOX: Alvarez vs. Poirier 2 took place July 28 at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo (27-4) faced off against hard-hitting contender Jeremy Stephens (28-15) in the night’s co-main event, which aired live on FOX. Round 1: The referee for the co-main event will be Yves Lavigne. Tentative start for both men. Stephens scores the first leg kick. He throws a couple of heavy rights that Aldo gets out of the way of. They trade right hands right to the chin. Left hook by Stephens glances off of Aldo’s head. Counter uppercut by Aldo stops Stephens for a second, but he pushes in and starts unloading. He lands an uppercut of his own and he’s doing some serious damage, Aldo’s chin holding up. The former champ fires a straight right, then another. That right hand keeps finding a home. Straight left jab by Stephens slows Aldo down for a moment. Outside leg kick connects for Aldo. 1-2 backs Stephens up momentarily, but he’s marching forward. Aldo avoiding damage and he crushes Stephens’s mid-section with a body shot combo. Stephens visibly hurt, he falls back and Aldo pounces on top of him. Ground and pound by Aldo, Stephens being given every chance to recover, but Lavigne has to jump in for the stoppage.
