UFC on FOX 30 live blog: Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier 2

This is the UFC on FOX 30 live blog for Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier, a lightweight bout at Saturday’s UFC event at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta.

Alvarez and Poirier are facing off in a rematch of their UFC 211 bout in May 2017 that ended in a no-contest after Alvarez landed an illegal blow on Poirier.

Alvarez, the former lightweight champion who is coming off of a knockout win of Justin Gaethje, faces Poirier, who has won three straight and seven of eight (excluding one no-contest) since moving up to 155 pounds, in the main event.

Round 1: Referee Marc Goddard will oversee the main event. Poirier looking to tag Alvarez from distance. They trade leg kicks. Poirier keeping Alvarez at bay with a jab, then a straight left. Leg kick by Poirier has Alvarez briefly off-balance. Alvarez goes body-body-head, but Poirier defending well. Single leg by Alvarez, he doesn’t commit and gets out before Poirier can counter strike. Jab lands solidly for Poirier, then the straight left again. Takedown blocked by Poirier. They exchange outside leg kicks. Flurry between the two ends with Poirier landing a right hand over the top. Alvarez to the body again with punches. 1-2 up top by Poirier sets up hard leg kick. They trade punches to close out the round.

MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9, Poirier.

Round 2: Alvarez comes out swinging, landing a leg kick but whiffing on an uppercut. Spinning back fist connects for Alvarez. High kick by Poirier is caught, he gets tripped, but is up quickly. Alvarez presses in and Poirier locks on a guillotine. He pulls guard. It is tight, but Alvarez remains calm and he works his head out. Alvarez pressing Poirier against the fence as they stand up. Separation and Alvarez shoots in for a takedown, he gets this one with less complications. Poirier has to let go of the guillotine choke he’s using to defend. Alvarez is laying on Poirier’s side and he is punishing Poirier with a neck crank. It doesn’t look like Poirier is in danger. Alvarez slips into mount against the fence, Poirier holding him close. Alvarez tries to throw a 12-6 elbow to the shoulder and Goddard calls for a stop. He warns Alvarez about the elbow and resets them in the center of the Octagon. Poirier starts firing as soon as the action resumes and he is backing Alvarez up. Poirier unloading now and Alvarez is in survival mode. He’s landing unanswered punches against the fence, Alvarez firing back wildly. Alvarez slumps down against the cage and Goddard has to call this one off.
