UFC on FOX 30 live blog: Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Tecia Torres

This is the UFC on FOX 30 live blog for Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Tecia Torres, a strawweight bout at Saturday’s UFC event at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta.

Jedrzejczyk, the former strawweight champion coming off of back-to-back losses, faces Torres, who has won three of her last four, on the main card.

Round 1: Keith Peterson on hand to officiate this one. Jedrzejczyk throwing the jab early and often. Torres not throwing much to start, she tries for a takedown and she’s wrestling Jedrzejczyk against the fence. They exchange knees in the clinch. Jedrzejczyk gets an underhook and lands a solid knee to the midsection. She reverses the position, but Torres grapevines Jedrzejczyk’s leg and gets her back off the fence. Jedrzejczyk still landing the occasional knee as they jockey for position. These two have been locked together the entire round and Jedrzejczyk has been having more success coring in the clinch. Glancing knee to the head by Jedrzejczyk as Torres tries to reset and shoot in for a single leg. Not a lot to score so far.

Round 2: Jedrzejczyk is looking to stay out of grappling range, she’s pumping that jab and scoring with leg kicks. Torres is responding with leg kicks of her own. 1-2 for Jedrzejczyk connects and she gets in and out. After some more inconclusive striking, Torres darts in for a takedown and they’re back to working against the fence. Torres having more success with control in this round, but she can’t get her strikes going. She lands a short punch as they break apart and return to the center of the Octagon. Jedrzejczyk lands a straight right to the body. Torres with a flurry and she’s landing, though Jedrzejczyk fires back. Big finish for both fighters. Extremely close fight.

Round 3: The reach advantage has been big for Jedrzejczyk here as she’s able to score from distance while Torres has to take a risk just to get in. She’s finding success with her leg kicks. She catches a Jedrzejczyk kick and lands a quick punch. Jedrzejczyk throws a pair of body kicks and Torres pushes through to go for a single leg against the fence. Jedrzejczyk needs a time out for a wardrobe malfunction. The action quickly resumes and Torres takes a front kick to the body. She goes back in for a takedown. Knees to the body by Jedrzejczyk in the clinch. Grueling fight and all three rounds could have gone either way.
