At UFC 226, Daniel Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic in the first round to claim the UFC heavyweight title. In the aftermath, former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar came into the octagon and confronted the new “Baddest Man on the Planet,” shoving Cormier before getting on the microphone and cutting a promo, setting up a massive title fight for his return to the UFC.

All of this was bad news for Miocic and he is not the only one displeased with the situation. UFC commentator Joe Rogan agrees that with what Miocic accomplished, he deserves a rematch with Cormier, something he opined on the latest edition of his Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show podcast.

“He should [get a rematch],” Rogan said. “People are thinking, the guy wins more UFC title defenses than anybody on the history of the sport and becomes the most accomplished heavyweight of all time. Think about what he’s done. Think about the fact that he knocks out Fabricio Werdum to win the title, he knocks out Alistair Overeem to defend the title, he knocks out Junior dos Santos, beats Francis when everybody is terrified of Francis. He became the most accomplished heavyweight of all time. Then he gets knocked out by a crazy, perfect punch by Daniel Cormier in a perfect strategy.”

The quick KO loss leaves Miocic, who previously had designs on a money fight with Lesnar out in the cold of the heavyweight title picture. Miocic defended the UFC heavyweight title more times than any other fighter in history and wants an immediate rematch, as long-reigning champions have often been given in the UFC. Unfortunately for Miocic, Cormier is set on retiring next March, and with Lesnar unable to compete until January, that leaves a very small window for Miocic to get a second crack at Cormier. Cormier himself has said he could potentially fight Miocic after Lesnar but recently said Lesnar would be his final bout, seemingly leaving Miocic up a creek without a paddle. That means, as Rogan elucidates, there is only one real way for Miocic to get a rematch before Cormier hangs up the gloves, Lesnar screwing up.

“The fight is Brock but the question is, can Brock pass tests?”

Lesnar has returned to the USADA testing pool and will only be eligible to fight should he not fail any tests until after January.
