UFC 225 results: Tai Tuivasa ekes out decision over Andrei Arlovski

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Tai Tuivasa put in more cage time against Andrei Arlovski on Saturday night than he had in all seven of his previous career fights combined.

And not only did the up-and-coming Australian heavyweight gain valuable experience at UFC 225, but he also came out with a victory. Tuivasa earned a unanimous decision at Chicago’s United Center on 29-28, across-the-board scores.

“I said when I got the fight it’s an honor to fight Andrei,” Tuivasa (8-0) said. “Andrei, we put on a f*cking mad show.”

Tuivasa dropped Arlovski early in the round, and later scored a takedown. After a prolonged stalemate, the duo scramble back to their feet, where the rest of the round played out.

In the second, Arlovski did his veteran best to turn the fight into a down-and-dirty affair, using every trick in the book to try to eke out the win using guile. It turned into a methodical, but hard-hitting affair as Arlovski had his best round of the fight.

Arvloski had plenty left in the gas tank and tried to turn up the heat in the third, but if he was counting on Tuivasa folding, it didn’t happen, as he matched him blow-for-blow in another close round.

Tuivsasa, who had first-round knockouts in all seven of his previous victories, is now 3-0 in th UFC.

“Finally, I can shut a few people up and say I went to the second round,” he said.

Arlovski (27-16, 1 NC), the former UFC heavyweight champion, had a two-fight win streak snapped.
