UFC 225 results: Curtis Blaydes scores violent finish of Alistair Overeem

In case there was any doubt going into Saturday night, there shouldn’t be any more: Curtis Blaydes is legit.

The 27-year-old from Chicago announced to the world he’s the real deal in the heavyweight division with the biggest victory of his career. Blaydes used a nasty series of elbows to finish veteran Alistair Overeem in front of Blaydes’ hometown fans at United Center in the featured prelim bout of UFC 225.

“I just want to say one thing,” Blaydes said. “I’m next in the line for the belt, I’m next.”

The opening round was methodical, as Overeem attempted to use odd angles to keep Blaydes from figuring him out before Blaydes scored a takedown.

Overeem had his best round in the second, as he rocked Blaydes with a right hand and worked kneebars as they hit the ground.

But Blaydes took over in the third, scoring a takedown, improving his position and then raining down a half-dozen nasty elbows, opening a gruesome cut on Overeem’s head and causing the fight to be waved off at the 2:56 mark.

With the win, Blaydes improves to 10-1 (1 NC). It was his eighth career KO/TKO win. Overeem (43-17, 1 NC) has dropped two in a row after his 12th KO/TKO loss.
