Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero threw down for another 25 minutes and earned another Fight of the Night award.
In a rematch of their hotly contested interim title fight at UFC 213 last July, Whittaker again won a five-round war against Romero — this time by split decision — in the main event of UFC 225 at the United Center in Chicago on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Romero, he missed weight on Friday by 0.2 pounds, making him ineligible to win Whittaker’s middleweight championship and to receive a post-fight bonus, according to UFC president Dana White.
Typically, both fighters involved in the Fight of the Night win $50,000 bonuses, but on this occasion Whittaker will receive a $100,000 bonus instead.
Performance of the Night bonuses went to heavyweight Curtis Blaydes and lightweight Charles Oliveira.
Blaydes put the finishing touch on a strong performance against Alistair Overeem by bludgeoning the former Strikeforce and K-1 champion with ground-and-pound to earn the stoppage in round three, while Oliveira made short work of Clay Guida with a first-round guillotine choke submission.
It was the 10th submission victory inside the Octagon for Oliveira, tying him with the legendary Royce Gracie for the most submission wins in UFC history. Oliveira also earned the 11th post-fight bonus of his UFC career.
