Gillian Robertson shut the Molly McCann hype train down fast.
The 23-year-old American Top Team product silenced the crowd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, on Sunday, finishing hometown fighter McCann with a suffocating rear-naked choke in the second round of their preliminary bout at UFC Liverpool.
McCann, a champion in the Cage Warriors promotion at 125 pounds, was making her UFC debut. She struggled to shake off Robertson once the fight hit the mat, which it did in both rounds, and Robertson aggressively pursued a submission from mount before McCann gave up her back and the fight-ending choke. McCann did not tap out and it took referee Neil Hall several seconds to realize that the fighter was unconscious.
Since emerging as a prospect on The Ultimate Fighter 26, Robertson has won both her UFC fights via submission and is now 5-2 as a professional.
McCann (7-2) missed weight by one pound for the women’s flyweight encounter. She sees a six-fight win streak come to an end.
