It may not have been the prettiest fight, but Kamaru Usman did what he needed to do against Demian Maia on Saturday night.
Usman defeated Maia via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC Chile, grinding his way to a division-best eighth consecutive win. With the victory, Usman not only kept his hot streak alive, but he also tied the second-longest winning streak in UFC welterweight history, matching Jon Fitch’s best run and trailing only Georges St-Pierre’s legendary mark of 12 straight wins. Will be a No. 1 contender fight be next for “The Nigerian Nightmare?”
Check out reaction to his performance below, plus the best of the rest from UFC Chile.
KAMARU USMAN DEF. DEMIAN MAIA
Maia is looking tired #UFCChile
— Belal muhammad (@bullyb170) May 20, 2018
Usman better turn it up to like 40%. #UFCChile
— Matt Schnell (@DANGER_Caged) May 20, 2018
Watching entertaining @USMAN84kg vs @demianMaia @UFC @FS1 but just might be the most annoying ref I️ ever saw #UFCChile
— Charles Rosa (@CharlesRosaMMA) May 20, 2018
Ref must be bored, micromanaging a bit #UFCChile
— Angela Hill (@AngieOverkill) May 20, 2018
Excuse me Mr. Leon Roberts sir, grappling IS an aspect of #MMA OK, good talk. #UFCChile
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) May 20, 2018
Maia must be stylistically the worst fighter to compete against. The ground threat so real people can't commit on the feet to go for the finish. #UFCChile
— Damien Brown (@beatdown155) May 20, 2018
Never understood why Maia didn't work on his kicking game over the years, as no one would try to take him down off a caught or missed one. #ufcchile pic.twitter.com/5PzdzMzfUd
— The Mane Event™ (@EliasTheodorou) May 20, 2018
Im not knocking Usman but that wasn’t a very good performance. Still a fan but i was really hoping for a title shot worthy performance
— Sam Alvey (@smilensam) May 20, 2018
He survives but girls are laughing at him
— Al Iaquinta (@ALIAQUINTA) May 20, 2018
This is so frustrating

— Francis NGannou (@francis_ngannou) May 20, 2018
Congratulations to @USMAN84kg for the win. it was a great experience to compete against you. When I took the call 3 weeks ago, I knew it would be a very hard challenge and I’m proud to have come here and done it. You deserved the chance and Chile deserved a card. Best of luck. pic.twitter.com/M27biVDvr5

TATIANA SUAREZ DEF. ALEXA GRASSO
Suarez makes it look relatively easy against a feisty Grasso. Suarez continues to be a problem in that division. #UFCChile
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) May 20, 2018
She’s a beast KF https://t.co/XQ7quhU66e
— Manny Gamburyan (@MannyGamburyan) May 20, 2018

— Angela Hill (@AngieOverkill) May 20, 2018
Damn two fighters on this card beat cancer! That alone is amazing #UFCSantiago #UFCChile
— Brad Tavares (@BradTavares) May 20, 2018
Grasso has to tap(o)! #ufcchile pic.twitter.com/mz8KtkY1qy
— The Mane Event™ (@EliasTheodorou) May 20, 2018
I was actually waiting for this to happen to Grasso, as a striker it’s a blessing in disguise that I got wrestle fucked so early in my career. I buckled down and worked on my wrestling so that I would not let that happen again. Let see if Grasso adjusts. #UFCChile
— Angela Hill (@AngieOverkill) May 20, 2018
@TSPMMA115 is the best wrestler/overall grappler in 115/125lb divisions.
— éS (@EricSpicely) May 20, 2018
She could move up to 125 and be make a really clean run to the belt. #ufcchile she’s that good.
— éS (@EricSpicely) May 20, 2018
DOMINICK REYES DEF. JARED CANNONIER
Holy shit Reyes is HUGE #UFCChile

You guys agree with the stoppage? #UFCChile
— Brad Tavares (@BradTavares) May 20, 2018
Bad stoppage??? #UFCChile pic.twitter.com/xBRArKVTuL
— The Mane Event™ (@EliasTheodorou) May 20, 2018
Fucking early stoppage!!! Jared was getting up, eyes clear, ready to fight, and they fucking stopped it. Jesus. Half the time refs let fighters get beat to death but tonight Goddard took a man's chance to win and half his paycheck away. FUCK
— Lauren Murphy (@LaurenMurphyMMA) May 20, 2018
Damn that was a sweet shoulder roll uppercut #UFCChile
— Angela Hill (@AngieOverkill) May 20, 2018
Make it 7 first round finishes for Reyes! #UFCChile
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) May 20, 2018

— The Mane Event™ (@EliasTheodorou) May 20, 2018
I’ll say it now cuz I’ve been saying it. Someone gonna take my idea but this will be proof. Fighting octagon or circle or square. Whatever shape, the fight should take place in a bulletproof glass ring. #PlatinumPromotions No more grabbin the cage. No more blocked view @danawhite
— Platinum Mike Perry (@PlatinumPerry) May 20, 2018
ANDREA LEE DEF. VERONICA MACEDO
Crazy how few women can deal with good Thai clinch in mma. Great scrap so far #UFCChile
— Angela Hill (@AngieOverkill) May 20, 2018
Why isn’t the ref telling them to stand up ? #UFCChile
— Katlyn Chookagian (@blondefighter) May 20, 2018

— Platinum Mike Perry (@PlatinumPerry) May 20, 2018
If you don’t already know, @AndreaKGBLee is a Savage. #UFCChile
— Chase Sherman (@ChaseShermanUFC) May 20, 2018
Wasn’t the performance I’d hoped 4. 1st time I’ve ever felt rusty. I promise I’ll shake off the cage rust & look way sharper in my next outing. Happy I got the W disappointed though over my sluggishness. Sorry guys. #thebestisyettocome #ufcfightnight129 #karatemafia #relsongracie pic.twitter.com/jha3We5jse

VICENTE LUQUE DEF. CHAD LAPRISE
Ugh, chad got caught with a short left hook coming in. Didn't look too hard, but Chad's momentum made it worse. Tough night, but I know Chad will learn and come back harder. #ufcchile
— The Mane Event™ (@EliasTheodorou) May 20, 2018
Luque is one of the best fighters in the division #UFCChile
— éS (@EricSpicely) May 20, 2018
Luque’s patience & pressure pays off. #UFCChile
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) May 20, 2018
Sorry I hiccuped Luque’s name at the end of that interview!! Hell of a performance tonight!! Great things ahead for him!
— Jimmy Smith (@jimmysmithmma) May 20, 2018
MICHEL PRAZERES DEF. ZAK CUMMINGS
Prazeres is basically a brick wall with legs. #UFCChile pic.twitter.com/VVJ833QNeT
— The Mane Event™ (@EliasTheodorou) May 20, 2018
At worst it’s a 29-28 decision for a Prazeres but I had him 30-27 over Cummings. #UFCChile
— Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) May 20, 2018
Dropped a close one tonight. I don’t really believe in ring rust but it took me a bit to get that feeling back. I love this sport and everyone that’s been through this journey with me. Still improving and loving what I do. I’ll be back soon ready to put on a more exciting show!
