In case you wondered what the hype surrounding Andrea Lee was all about, you found out late in the first round of her UFC Chile bout with Veronica Macedo.
Macedo drilled Lee with a head kick and was pushing forward trying to land more. But in the blink of an eye, Lee regained her bearings, landed a throw, and transitioned into a series of dominant positions.
That sort of tenacity marked Lee’s successful UFC debut on Saturday night, as she rolled to a unanimous decision win in their flyweight bout. The judges’ scores at Movistar Arena in Santiago were 30-27 across the board.
After sealing the first round with that late exchange, “KGB” continued controlling matters in the second. Macedo resorted often to staying on her back and kicking at the standing Lee, to the displeasure of the crowd. But Lee didn’t fall for the bait and continued to control things for the bulk of the bout, both standing and on the mat. A arm-triangle choke in the final round punctuated Lee’s performance.
Lee, of Shreveport, La., improved to 9-2 with her fifth straight win. Macedo, of Venezuela, is 5-2-1 and winless in her past three.
