Tecia Torres says she and Raquel Pennington agree with corner’s decision to let her fight

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Raquel Pennington’s corner has come under a firestorm of criticism for their handling of their fighter in the late stages of their UFC 224 bout against UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

Pennington was overheard saying she was done with her fight with Nunes after the fourth round of their bout Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro. But she was sent back out and absorbed a brutal beating before the bout was finally waved off in the fifth.

But, at least publicly, Pennington and partner Tecia Torres aren’t having the criticism. Torres, Pennington’s fiancee and teammate at Colorado Springs’ Triple Threat Gym, posted on Instagram on Sunday, saying they both agree with their coaches’ decision.

“Both us and our coaches agree with the decision made to go into the 5th round,” the post read. “We know Raquel more than anyone else and know if we let her give up on herself going into the last round she would have always regretted it. She fought with heart and grit until the end.”
