Minutes before she was brutally finished by Amanda Nunes in the main event of UFC 224, Raquel Pennington tried to tell her corner that she was done.
Pennington suffered a TKO defeat at 2:36 of the fifth round to Nunes, the reigning UFC women’s bantamweight champion, on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Prior to that though, in the time between the fourth and fifth round of a fight she was soundly losing, Pennington told her coaches, “I’m done. I want to be done.” However, Pennington’s pleas were ignored, as she was sent back out to face Nunes for the final round, igniting a debate within the MMA community about the responsibility of a cornerman.
