Karolina Kowalkiewicz looks primed for another run at a UFC strawweight title shot.
Kowalkiewicz took it to a game Felice Herrig in the featured prelim bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Kowalkiewicz took two out of three 29-28 scores for a split-decision victory.
The duo threw down in the opening round, with Kowalkiewicz pushing the pace and Herrig answering with counters. Kowalkiewicz, who comes from a kickboxing back ground, showed off a solid ground game in the round’s final minute, which likely sealed the round in her favor.
By the second round, Kowalkiewicz found her groove, as she effortlessly landed all sorts of elbows and kept Herrig from getting anything going. No one questions Herrig’s toughness, though, and she went for broke in the final round, stunning her opponent in the final minute and working for a finish right up until the final horn.
“I expected I would fight three tough rounds, Felice is very tough,” Kowalkiewicz said. “I’m excited I won the fight.”
With the win, Kowalkiewicz improved to 12-2. She’s won two in a row and five out of seven of her UFC fights. Herrig (14-7) had a four-fight win streak snapped.
