This is the UFC 223 live blog for Joe Lauzon vs. Chris Gruetzemacher, a lightweight bout at Saturday night’s UFC event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

A veteran of 25 UFC fights, Lauzon will look to break out of a 1-3 slump when he takes on Gruetzemacher, who has lost two straight after winning 13 of his first 14 fights, on the main card.

Round 1: On hand for the main card opener, referee Dan Miragliotta. Gruetzemacher charges in with a shot to the body and Lauzon is happy to reciprocate with 1-2 combos right over the top. Quick start. Unsurprisingly, lots of volume from Lauzon, capped off by a sharp standing elbow. Lauzon shoots in and gets stuffed, he pulls guard. Neither man able to do much, Lauzon tries to kick Gruetzemacher off, but Gruetzemacher wants to stay on top. He lands strikes from top position. Lauzon with a heel hook attempt. Gruetzemacher gets out and tries to dive on top again, Lauzon returns the action to the feet. Elbows from Lauzon land again. They’re clinching up and Gruetzemacher scores with punches up the middle. Now it’s Gruetzemacher on the offensive, landing straight punches. A minute to go and Gruetzemacher is pressing forward, he has Lauzon turtling up and he blasts him with an uppercut. More punches up the middle by Gruetzemacher and Lauzon is just standing in the pocket with him.

Round 2: Gruetzemacher stalking forward right away and Lauzon looks both cut up and tired. Kick to the body by Gruetzemacher, Lauzon shoots in for a takedown and Gruetzemacher stuffs him again. Knee to the body by Gruetzemacher. He’s landing punches to the body too, connecting at will. There’s a cut under Lauzon’s right eye. Lauzon not backing up at all, but he is getting tagged. Gruetzemacher with elbows to the face now in the clinch. Lauzon with a brief flurry, Gruetzemacher avoids the worst of it. Gruetzemacher bullies Lauzon against the cage and continues to work the body. Lauzon fires back, but he looks much, much slower than Gruetzemacher. Lauzon’s face is a bloody mess. Uppercuts by Gruetzemacher have Lauzon visibly hurt. He’s still on his feet, but that round was all Gruetzemacher. Shortly after the bell sounds, Lauzon’s corner makes the call to wave this one off.
