Alexis Vila, a longtime MMA fighter and former Olympic medalist in wrestling, has been charged with murder.
Vila, who fought for Bellator, World Series of Fighting and others during his career, was arrested April 17 in Miami on a second-degree murder charge involving a conspiracy and weapon, MMA Fighting confirmed via Miami-Dade County police records Monday. The warrant for his arrest was issued March 29.
Vila, 47, is currently being held without bond at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. He has a pending hold for immigration. Vila is a Cuba native, who defected to the United States in 1997.
In 2004, Vila was charged with committing airport violence after he crashed his vehicle into a terminal at the Fort Lauderdale airport. Vila served three years in prison and began an MMA career when he got out.
Vila won the wrestling bronze medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics for Cuba. He is a two-time wrestling world champion. In MMA, he owns wins over Joe Warren, Marcos Galvao and Ben Nguyen.
Vila holds a 15-7 record in mixed martial arts in the flyweight and bantamweight divisions. He last competed in 2016 for Titan FC.
