UFC Atlantic City live blog: Frankie Edgar vs. Cub Swanson 2

This is the UFC Atlantic City live blog for Frankie Edgar vs. Cub Swanson 2, a featherweight rematch at Saturday night’s UFC event at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Edgar, a former lightweight champion with just three losses in 10 appearances at 145 pounds, takes on Swanson, winner of four of his last five, in the co-main event.

The two previously fought in the main event of UFC Austin back on Nov. 22, 2014. That night, Edgar defeated Swanson by fifth-round submission.

Round 1: Overseeing this fight is referee Marc Goddard. Lots of feints from both men early, Edgar firing out that jab. Swanson staying patient, he’s looking to counter. Single leg by Edgar is shrugged off. Edgar in pursuit and he lands a 1-2 combo. Swanson gets clipped as he throws a right hand and Edgar swarms with punches, backing Swanson up against the fence. Swanson avoids the follow-up flurry and a takedown attempt, and the reset in the center of the Octagon. Inside leg kick is scoring for Edgar. Swanson looks like he’s having a lot of trouble figuring out Edgar’s movement. Swanson lands a spinning kick, then a kick to the body to close out the round.

Round 2: Edgar pumping the jab again, but Swanson makes him pay with a right hand. Undeterred, Edgar presses forward and cracks Swanson with another jab. He drops his hands briefly, trying to goad Swanson into something. Edgar aggressively moves in and lands an uppercut. Three-punch combo scores for Edgar. He’s landing consistently now. Swanson with low volume in the striking department. His takedown defense is holding up as he shuts down a deep Edgar takedown attempt. Swanson’s leg is red from absorbing leg kicks. He lands a good one of his own on the outside of Edgar’s lead leg. His jab is coming out with more frequency and it’s scoring. Edgar pressing forward in the last 30 seconds, he fails on another takedown and Swanson hits him with a counter-punch.

Round 3: Final frame looking like the previous two, with Edgar scoring with his jab and leg kicks. Swanson catches him with a lunging straight right. Lots of feints, though neither man is opening up. Right hand lands for Edgar. In close, Swanson throws punches to Edgar’s body. Right hand across the chin for Swanson. Takedown attempt by Edgar and he’s pressing Swanson against the cage. Swanson has the whizzer, he’s using the fence to stay up and they eventually disengage. Swanson tries to get aggressive, but Edgar backs him up with a punching combination. Both men with blood on their faces as the buzzer sounds.
