ONE Championship results: Kevin Belingon stops Andrew Leone with grounded knees to the head

New, comments

Kevin Belingon may have put himself in contention for a shot at Bibiano Fernandes’ title with his second-round finish of Andrew Leone in the main event of ONE Championship: Heroes of Honor, Friday in Manila.

The action started at a frantic pace as Belingon marched Leone down and landed several kicks before staving off a handful of takedowns.

It was Belingon who eventually took the fight to the ground, opening the American up with a clean elbow, which prompted a brief stoppage. When the action resumed, the Filipino scored another takedown and landed steady grounded strikes from half guard before the round ended.

After a more tentative start to the second round, “The Silencer” sent Leone reeling with a turning back kick to the liver. Although Leone managed to regain control from the bottom for a few seconds, Belingon sliced through his defensive shield with knees to stop the contest shortly after landing the spectacular kick.

Earlier in the night, Honorio Banario’s slick footwork and volume got the split decision nod over Adrian Pang’s brute force in their lightweight clash.

Banario caught fire at the end of the first round after Pang waved him into the exchanges, landing several sharp shots on his comparatively stationary opponent.

Although Banario continued to frustrate the Australian with his superior footwork in the second, Pang managed to land three big shots that edged the momentum back in his favor. Banario landed a lot more frequently as Pang marched forward in the third. “The Hunter” definitely scored with the more dramatic shots over in the last stanza — notably a spinning back kick that connected just before the contest entered the final minute.

Former featherweight champion Marat Gafurov bounced back from his title loss to Martin Nguyen with a crushing display against Emilio Urrutia. The Russian didn’t waste any time taking the fight to the ground. After some difficulty passing the American’s guard, “Cobra” choked “The Honey Badger” out after applying an arm triangle midway through the first.

The action took place in a cage instead of the usual round cage used by One to celebrate the launch of the Super Series — the promotion’s new global league for elite striker.

In the Super Series main event, pound for pound kickboxing great Giorgio Petrosyan suffocated Lion Fights champion “Smokin’” Jo Nattawut with pressure to score a decision win.

Thai legend Nong-O Gaiyanghadao and Dutch kickboxer Regian Eersel also took decision victories in the Super Series portion of the night. Brazilian knockout artist Alexandre Cosmo scored the only stoppage victory of the Super Series when he finished Caged Thai champion, Elliot Compton, with a knee to the body in the second round.
