UFC 222 live blog: Frankie Edgar vs. Brian Ortega

This is the UFC 222 live blog for Frankie Edgar vs. Brian Ortega, a featherweight bout at Saturday night’s UFC event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Edgar, a former UFC lightweight champion with wins in seven of his last eight fights, takes on Ortega, who is 13-0 with five consecutive finishes, in the evening’s co-main event.

Round 1: Referee Jason Herzog on hand for the evening’s co-main event. Edgar working that left lead leg of Ortega. Edgar with tons of volume punching early. Ortega having success with his jab. High kick blocked by Ortega. Edgar in and out, he scores with a right hook. Every time Ortega connects with a jab, Edgar responds with combination punches. Jumping kick by Ortega hits Edgar’s left side. Edgar hits the low kick and Ortega goes for his neck, but Edgar slips his head out. Body work from Edgar in close. Counter left by Ortega stuns Edgar. Ortega is pouring it on. He cracks him with an elbow and then blasts him off of his feet with a monster right uppercut. He follows with hammer fists and Herzog has to wave this one off.
