Darren Till has been hunting for a marquee matchup, and he just might have it.
Sources told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that a bout between the undefeated welterweight contender and two-time title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is in the works for the main event of UFC Liverpool on May 27.
The potential pairing was first reported by BJPenn.com.
UFC officials previously announced that Till would be headlining the show in his hometown, but had yet to book an opponent for the 25-year-old Scouser.
Till (16-0-1) has not competed since a first-round TKO win over Donald Cerrone last October at UFC Gdansk, but he’s remained in the headlines with talks of him possibly facing the likes of Thompson, Mike Perry, Gunnar Nelson, and former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.
In Thompson (14-2-1), Till receives an opponent who could vault him into a title shot if he can put on a winning performance. The 35-year-old Thompson bounced back from a pair of failed title opportunities against welterweight champion Tyron Woodley with a unanimous decision win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 217 last November. Thompson’s UFC record stands at 9-2-1.
