Mark Hunt only has two fights left on his UFC contract, but he is looking to make the most of them.
Hunt last fought in February, losing a unanimous decision to Curtis Blaydes at UFC 221. The loss seemed to spell the end of Hunt’s title aspirations, especially with so few fights left on Hunt’s contract and the assumption that Hunt will depart the UFC, a company he is currently suing, after his contract expires. Don’t tell that to “The Super Samoan” though, who is angling for fights with Francis Ngannou or Alexander Volkov this summer; basically, anyone higher than him in the rankings.
“We’re looking to see if I can get Ngannou for August in Hawaii – that’d be great,” Hunt told Sporting News recently. “Ngannou would be good for me, or [Alexander] Volkov, who just beat Fabricio – if he’s still available.
“I’m just trying to get someone higher than me. I’ve got two fights left, so I’m seeing if I can get Ngannou. I don’t know if they’ve confirmed Hawaii, but it’d be a great match… see who shoots for the takedown first.”
Volkov, who is coming off a sensational upset win last weekend of former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and is looking towards a potential title fight, is not a likely opponent for the fifth-ranked Hunt coming off a loss. Ngannou, however, is also coming off a loss in his failed title bid at UFC 220.
Ngannou is also the only man ranked above Hunt in the rankings that Hunt has never fought, meaning the fight would make some sense. The only problem is that both Ngannou and Derrick Lewis, the man who shares a number five ranking with Hunt, have both expressed interest in fighting each other this summer, leaving Hunt out in the cold. If that is the fight the UFC does end up making, Hunt would settle for a rematch against any of those other opponents that are ranked above him, even if he would prefer the Ngannou fight.
“I fought a guy that was beneath me last time, so I want someone higher now,” Hunt said. “Even Werdum, I want that rematch, but Ngannou would be a better match. Even give me Blaydes again and I’ll have another shot at him.”
Unfortunately for Hunt, Blaydes and Alistair Overeem are expected to fight one another at UFC 225 with a title shot likely on the line. However, a rematch with Werdum would be fitting at this point. Werdum knocked out Hunt at 180 to claim the interim heavyweight title and as the two aging legends begin closing out their illustrious careers, a chance for redemption for Hunt is plenty of incentive. Still, on his Twitter account the “old war horse” made it clear who he would prefer to fight if he had his druthers.

I’m sorry mate, truth is I’m scared of you! At 100% I could imagine you to be a monster so fuck that shit. I’m scared of wrestlers! And your striking is great aswell! Weird that you called out Colby after your last fight and not me tho ♂️ #UsmanTheTwitterTalker— Darren Till (@darrentill2) March 21, 2018
I called out Colby because he wasn't under witness protection from @danawhite like you. He just simply hid like a lil Bitch. Now I'm free you're free the only way this fight doesn't happen is either you're a lil bitch or still under witness protection from Dana.— KAMARU USMAN (@USMAN84kg) March 21, 2018
I’m a bitch who will come to rip your fucking head off, you will fake to want to fight with me and try to shag my leg off... I am finally ready to get over my fears and fight you. You beast! @seanshelby #UFCLiverpool— Darren Till (@darrentill2) March 21, 2018
