Floyd Mayweather says he’s going to start training MMA ‘soon,’ claims his wrestling game is a ‘seven’ out of 10

Is Floyd Mayweather actually going work with Tyron Woodley for a potential move to MMA?

Less than a week after Woodley suggested that he and Mayweather were going to start training together for the boxing legend’s rumored jump into MMA, Mayweather doubled down on the idea in a Wednesday interview with TMZ. Mayweather said he hasn’t started training with the UFC welterweight champion yet but he is “gonna start soon.”

Mayweather added that he’ll probably need longer than the “2 1/2 months” timeline Woodley initially floated to get adequately prepared.

“We’ve talked. We’ve been texting back and forth. We talked a couple times so we’re going to start working out real soon,” Mayweather told TMZ.

“I’ll probably need a little bit longer (than three months), a little bit longer, even if it takes six to eight months. Whatever it takes, we want to make sure that everything is done correctly and everything is done the right way.”

Mayweather, 41, is considered one of the greatest boxers of his era. The American retired from the ring with an undefeated 50-0 record in 2017 following his 10th round TKO win over UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Mayweather said the transition from boxing to MMA was “probably going to be a little difficult” but spoke optimistically about his abilities to grasp the new aspects of the game.

“It doesn’t matter. I can wrestle,” Mayweather said. “My wrestling game is not that bad. On a scale from one to 10, I would say it’s probably a seven, and I think we could take it up to like a nine, if possible. Of course my hand game is, a scale from one to 10, it’s 100. And my kicking game, on a scale from one to 10, it’s probably a four. So we have to tweak a few things then, take things to that next level.”

Mayweather said he planned to speak with his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., as well as his team to figure out the specifics of his MMA move, but he expects the UFC will come calling.

“It’s all about presenting the right numbers,” Mayweather said. “And of course they’re going to present the right numbers, and we’re going to make it happen.”
