A UFC title rematch is headed to “The Windy City.”
Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero 2 for the middleweight title is scheduled for UFC 225 in Chicago, MMA Fighting has confirmed. The promotion is expected to officially announce the title fight in the near future.
BJPenn.com first reported the news.
Whittaker (19-4) defeated Romero (13-2) via unanimous decision at UFC 213 last July to win the interim middleweight title. Since then, Whittaker was crowned the official champion without having to unify the belts after Georges St-Pierre decided to vacate the 185-pound belt following his victory over then-champion Michael Bisping at UFC 217.
Romero was scheduled to fight Luke Rockhold for the interim title in February after Whittaker pulled out due to a litany of illnesses -- including a bout with chicken pox — however, Romero missed weight prior to the fight and was thus ineligible to win the title. The Cuban-born fighter ended up knocking out Rockhold in the third round anyway and still cemented his place as the No. 1 contender.
Now, the duo will square off once again for the real title in the UFC’s first pay-per-view event at Chicago’s United Center. Former WWE champion turned MMA fighter CM Punk, who hails from Chicago, is also slated to compete on the card.
