Sage Northcutt went home to Texas on Sunday and will head back to Sacramento with a win in his pocket.
The 21-year-old from Katy, Texas, trains with Team Alpha Male these days. But he returned to Texas to fight at UFC Austin and scored a decision victory in a main card lightweight bout.
Northcutt picked up three 29-28 scores for the unanimous decision victory over Thibault Gouti, his third win in his past four fights.
A wild first round saw both competitors have their moments. Northcutt scored a takedown and spent much of the round in top position landing offense. Gouti rocked Northcutt with several solid punches, but never quite made him pay for it.
The second was all Gouti’s, as he scored a takedown and never let Northcutt get untracked.
In the third, Gouti scored several takedowns and held Northcutt on the mat without doing much of anything. Later, Northcutt landed several solid strikes, including a nasty standing elbow.
The decision was certainly debatable. Gouti had four takedowns to Northcutt’s one and 6:17 of control time to Northcutt’s 1:51, but Northcutt outstruck Gouti 111-29.
“It’s only been a few months since my last fight,” Northcutt (10-2) said. “Me and Mr. [Urijah] Faber are going to go back to work.”
JacksonWink’s Gouti dropped to 12-4, 1-4 in the UFC.
